Neurosurgery — common questions

When should I see a neurosurgeon for back pain?

If back or neck pain is severe, persistent, radiates into the arms or legs, or comes with numbness or weakness, a neurosurgical opinion helps rule out a disc or nerve problem. Most cases do not need surgery. Loss of bladder or bowel control is an emergency — seek care immediately.

Is surgery always required?

No. Many spine and nerve conditions are managed with medication, physiotherapy and activity changes. Surgery is considered only when symptoms are severe, worsening, or not settling with conservative treatment.

Can I get a second opinion before spine surgery?

Yes, and we encourage it. Bring your MRI films and previous reports for an unhurried review of whether surgery is genuinely needed and what the alternatives are.

What should I bring to a neuro consultation?

Any MRI or CT films and reports, previous prescriptions, and a short note of when your symptoms started and what makes them better or worse.
